I will not buy another Sony. I thought I was buying a quality product when I bought the Sony brand. I have had this dvd player for just over a year, but it spent over 8mths of that time in storage during my deployment. When I returned from deployment, it worked very well for about 6mths, but now it just keeps saying loading and will not play any dvds. From the other reviews I have read, it sounds like this player has about a 1 year lifespan.
The Coaxial sound output gives your home theater system a clean, digital sound, with very realistic bassy sounds. It also has customizable settings for displaying movies in Cinema, Dynamic and Custom settings, which adds to the experience of watching the same movie in a different tone every time. I have yet to buy a Sony product that breaks on me (unless I drop it on hard concrete) and sometimes they still keep working all cracked open haha.anyway, I'm just sharing my experience. It is solid, and I've had it for about 3 years now, and doesn't even hiccup. So, don't lose it. Its a pretty solid player, and it decodes your dvds for your home theater system into its corresponding Dolby or DTS sound.
One thing I don't like is that the player itself only has 4 buttons, so it won't work properly without its remote. This is a great DVD player. It has 3 levels of adjustable sharpness which is a great feature. Explosions, planes, waterfalls, etc sound great.
I liked the colors better on the dvd and my friend thought one could see too many things and little flaws in the movie on the blueray. A blueray player went way down my list, if not totally off. It was tested against a Playstation 3 and there were no apparent difference in output. It is not worth to return it at less than $50, I can wait a little longer ~ a couple of years. However, I looked for a region-free dvd-player and this is not one of them. Five stars, because it has performed perfectly. Sites on the web led me to believe it was - I will check it out better next time. Also tested it versus a blueray version of the test movie on the PS 3.
IT'S ONLY BEEN A MONTH BUT IT'S WORKING GREAT. SO FAR IT'S GREAT. GREAT REMOTE-PICKED UP MY TV RIGHT AWAY.
It was easy to hook up: the composite jacks matched the inputs on the TV; couldn't use the component jacks and coaxial digital outputs, unfortunately. Playing CDs is very disappointing.
I'm not complaining, though.
The sound reproduction is so poor I just won't use it for that. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the remote control is programmable and compatible with the Toshiba (wish it had a mute button).
After the built-in DVD player in my 2-year-old Toshiba TV went south, I bought this unit. The composite hookup provides picture and sound quality on a par with VHS; the quality is noticeably inferior to that of the Toshiba's built-in player.
For the money, this unit is probably hard to beat.
